Gonzalo Higuain has issued a caution to Luis Suarez about playing in Major League Soccer, claiming that it is not an easy task.
The Argentine striker has battled in the United States since joining Inter Miami in 2020, and he has confessed that it has been much more difficult than he had anticipated.
“I imagined I’d arrive here with a cigar in my mouth,” Higuain stated during a Twitch interview with Christian Vieri.
“It’s a tough league. I discovered that it is comparable to Serie A.”
The Argentine forward is presently battling for a starting spot on Phil Neville’s team, and was named to the bench for the Herons’ recent win over Atlanta United.
Higuain joined the South Florida expansion team in 2020 and has since scored 15 goals and assisted on 12 others in 45 games. However, the figures are misleading.
Inter Miami finished 10th in the league in his first year, and 11th in 2021, with the Argentine attacker on the roster. He has yet to guide the squad into the postseason of Major League Soccer.
He’s also had various injury stints that have kept him out for weeks at a time, most notably a knee issue in April that took him out for about a month.
Suarez to America?
Suarez was expected to leave Atletico Madrid in the summer, when his contract with the club expires. He ignited more debate by acknowledging that playing in the American League would not be a ‘terrible choice.’
Diario UF has reported that he has already decided to join up with David Beckham at Inter Miami.
So, after weeks of rumors surrounding Suarez’s presence in the United States, Higuain’s warning may be apt!
Suarez spoke about the prospect of playing in MLS one day in the future during Barcelona’s pre-season tour of the US in 2015.
“The other day I was walking through San Francisco and people did not know me,” he told ESPN Deportes. “The country is very big, football isn’t the main sport and you can be more relaxed. It is not a bad option.”
This isn’t the first time the La Liga forward has been linked to a move to Major League Soccer. Suarez had previously indicated an interest in Inter Miami during the 2022 offseason, following the departure of Blaise Matuidi.
While it appears that Wolves loanee Leonardo Campana will be retained on a permanent basis, anything may happen with David Beckham in command.
